Women get houses

SLUM Women's Initiative for Development, a non-government organisation in Jinja municipality, has embarked on a project to assist women acquire land at a low cost.

The project manager, Joyce Nangobi, said the initiative was aimed at helping women hit by poverty, ignorance and disease, access housing and live decently. "Most of our members are widows and have orphans under their care while some are people living with HIV/AIDS. We believe proper housing will improve the quality of their lives," she said.

Addressing guests at the organisation's annual general meeting in Walukuba division on Saturday, Nangobi said 14 women had completed payment for their plots with houses in Ntege and Central villages, while seven bought empty plots in School Village.

She explained that members are given loans at a low interest rate of 2%. Nangobi said the organisation, had purchased two plots while the district land board accepted to extend their lease from five to 49 years, adding that there was need for resource mobilisation.
