Michael Komakech, the LC1 chairman of Nwoya, said there are about 800 orphans in Pabit, Coorom, Nwoya and Kamguru. "More orphans are still returning from Bweyale and Pakwach, where they have been living with their grandparents or on their own," he said.
Helen Auma, 59, who looks after four orphans, asked the Government and development partners to support them with income-generating activities.
The elderly and extremely vulnerable individuals who have been abandoned by their relatives, have appealed to the Government to give them goats and local chicken that they can rear for money.
Charles Omoya, 57, said because of sicknesses, he was unable to return to his village and build a hut for himself. "So many people have now returned to Kamguru village and left us the old to starve. Sometimes when we go to the market to beg for food, people chase us away," he said.
Omoya said his four children were killed during the LRA insurgency, leaving him with a daughter and four grandchildren.
Edward Obwoya, 65, who walks on crutches, said his wife and son abandoned him during the LRA insurgency.
"We also need blankets and bicycles to take us to the health centre," he said. "I am being helped by my brothers because I cannot walk to the gardens and dig. I have no source of income," Obwoya said.
