Dear Doctor,
How can we help our HIV positive male friends who are having sex with fellow men, considering the hostile environment against homosexuals in the country? Many are in hiding and may die miserably.
Justine
Dear Justine,
It is important that all people who are HIV positive regardless of how they got the virus get registered and receive care.
AIDS service organisations do not have to know your sexual orientation before they care for you, but if one feels confident enough or is required to disclose his sexual partner, this can be done through a counsellor.
We should separate issues of morality from HIV. People get infected with HIV not because they have engaged in illegal sexual practices like adultery or homosexuality, which is illegal in Uganda, but because they were exposed to the virus via an unsafe practice or procedure-sexual or otherwise.
