A report on a study carried out by both bodies said:
"There has been a fall in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the projected 6.5% without AIDS to an estimated 5.3% with AIDS." GDP is a market value of the goods and services produced by a country.
The report, which was presented to a consultative meeting on the draft AIDS Bill at Protea Hotel on Thursday, showed that "by 2025, the economy will be 39% smaller than it would have been without AIDS."
It indicated that the scourge increased overall head count on poverty by 1.4 percentage points, since most affected persons lose the morale to work. those in rural areas are more affected, with poverty rising to 1.6% compared to urban areas at 0.9%.
It showed that HIV/AIDS is associated with additional household expenses, as they struggle to save infected people who need special diets and care.
In addition, households use about four months of their earnings to prepare for burial.
The Government's income also declines as tax revenues fall and governments at all levels are pressured to increase their spending to deal with the growing scourge.
The study calls for a quick and strong intervention by the government, to provide medical care for those affected by HIV/AIDS and more efforts in preventing infection.
