Nowelina Namukisa, the executive director of Meeting Point, said the project was sponsored by the US Agency for International Development. Those who test HIV-positive, she explained, were referred to hospitals for treatment.
Namukisa said the turn-up was encouraging and that the organisation involved all the schools in the area. She noted that it was important for the local community to change their behaviour so as to prevent further spread of HIV. "Namuwongo's slums accommodate a mixture of tribes. There is no defined culture; sexual immorality and drunkenness are on the increase, she said
Namukisa appealed for more food aid, saying when patients are being treated with anti-retroviral drugs, they must get proper nutrition. She regretted the fact that most residents could not afford adequate nutrition.
She said focussing food aid on displaced persons in the north posed a challenge to the nutrition needs of people living with HIV/AIDS.
