Uganda: Tears Flow at HIV Show

New Vision (Kampala) - December 9, 2008

Kampala - HIV/AIDS stories often evoke emotion but when they are told by afflicted children, the impact is more visible.

The recent Dutch-Uganda music concert by Moses Nsubuga "Supercharger" was no different: A woman from the audience collapsed on stage as she walked to hand over some money to the youngest boy in one of the singing groups.

Tears flowed freely as children, all under 17, sang about their suffering. They were joined by Dutch siblings, Leonoor, 14 and Pepjn, 12, who flew in to help raise money for less privileged children.

Pepjn's guitar skills wowed fans and Leonoor was good on vocals. The Dutch siblings met Nsubuga, a former Radio Simba presenter, in the Netherlands at a recent HIV/AIDS conference.

After the conference, their father, Tobias Rinke de Wit, exchanged views with Nsubuga who had also sung at the conference. The two agreed to organise a concert in Kampala. "They listened to my testimony and were moved," Nsubuga says.

At the show, Nsubuga donated mattresses and scholastic materials to the orphans. Some of the orphans included those of singers Amigo Wawa who was in Afrigo Band, Kyagera Musisi, Umar Katumba, Herman Basudde, Mbalire Kateteyi and Paulo Kafeero.
