Uganda: NRM Blames HIV Rise on Marital Infidelity

New Vision (Kampala) - December 8, 2008
Chris Ahimbisibwe

Kampala - THE NRM chief whip, Kabakumba Matsiko, has said government efforts to fight HIV/AIDS are being bogged down by married couples who engage in extra-marital affairs.

"Your time of sampling girls ended. You have got your life partners, what are you looking for?" Kabakumba asked.

She said it was unfortunate that some infected children contracted the disease as a result of their parents engaging in extra-marital sex.

"You are killing the children and it is absurd. The innocent babies are paying for our sins," she regretted.

She was on Friday officiating at the International AIDS Day celebrations at Kabwohe town council, Bushenyi district.

She said defilement and early marriages have also greatly contributed to the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country.

The head of the parliamentary HIV/AIDS committee, Elioda Tumwesigye (Sheema North), appealed to families to go for HIV/AIDS testing and counselling as part of the fight against the disease.

He said orphans and vulnerable children be provided with legal services to penalise those who defile and infect them with the disease.

Kabakumba said the Government is trying to collaborate with the private sector to produce affordable drugs for everyone.
