Uganda: Discordant Couples Urged to Use Condoms

Kampala - THE country director of Elizabeth Glasser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), William Salmond, has advised discordant couples to stick to condom use.

He was speaking during the opening of an HIV clinic at Bukulula health centre in Masaka district on December 2 where 640 people living with HIV/AIDS have been enrolled for Anti-retroviral Therapy.

Salmond also urged religious leaders to promote condom use among the couples as a strategy to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS amongst spouses. He said they have an obligation to save the lives of their followers.

He was reacting to a report from The Aids Support Organisation (TASO) Masaka Centre Manager Masaka, Godfrey Muzaaya who disclosed that 54% of the couples in the district were discordant.

"We must keep on using condoms to save spouses who are HIV negative".

"We thought HIV prevalence would be higher among youth but it is puzzling that it is common among married couples," Salmond said.

"The Church condemns killing and they have a duty to play. It is obvious that condoms must be used," he added.

TASO disclosed that many marriages break up because of discordance.
