Uganda: Mbarara HIV Patients Get Project

New Vision (Kampala) - December 3, 2008
Abdulkarim Ssengendo

Kampala - WOMEN living with HIV/AIDS in Kinoni, Mbarara district, have received a honey production project from the Japanese government.

The Japanese ambassador, Keiichi Kato, who commissioned the project on Tuesday at Kinoni county headquarters, said it aims at supporting community based development projects that benefit local people .

He said the Japanese government has supported over 65 projects worth $5m (about sh9.7b), in education, vocational training, health, safe water, sanitation and agriculture.

Kato said the project was worth US$ 85,975 (about sh165m).

Kato said the project will empower 525 women living with HIV/AIDS in Mbarara, Kiruhura and Isingiro districts by training them in bee-keeping and providing honey processing equipment.

The ambassador thanked the Government for promoting HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support to the victims.

The Rwampara MP, Charles Ngabirano, asked the Government to continue supporting the bee-keepers.
