First Lady commends global health group over HIV fight

New Vision (Kampala) - October 21, 2008

THE First Lady, Janet Museveni, has met with Henry McKinnell, the chairman of the Global Health Foundation. Global Health Foundation raises funds to treat and prevent infections in Africa, including HIV/AIDS.

During the meeting at State House Entebbe, on Monday, Mrs. Museveni commended the organisation for its support to Uganda, especially in the treatment of infectious diseases at the Infectious Diseases Institute based at Mulago Hospital.

A media release from State House stated that Mrs. Museveni, who is also the MP for Ruhaama, called for more research by the foundation in finding a lasting solution to the HIV/AIDS scourge.

Mrs. Museveni stressed that the scourge, which has no cure, needs to be handled with care.

McKinnell said the foundation had surpassed its targets because of the co-operation it had received from the Government, medical practitioners and civil society organisations.

He called for more research and approaches to deal with the stagnating HIV prevalence rate.

McKinnell also commended President Yoweri Museveni and his wife for their support to the HIV fight. Dr. Alex Courtinho, the executive director of the Infectious Diseases Institute, attended.
