The retired Anglican Bishop of Soroti diocese, Geresom Ilukor, noted that some religious leaders were misleading Christians and discouraging them from taking anti-retroviral treatment, claiming it is against the Christian faith and values.
"I am not preaching against the divine healing power, but it must be integrated with modern science," Ilukor said.
He noted that some religious leaders misinterpret the Bible and derail their followers from the truth.
Ilukor was speaking during a review meeting to discuss a report on the Home-based HIV/AIDS Counselling and Testing programme in Bukedea and Kumi districts at Kumi Hotel recently.
Under the programme that started in October 2005, trained community resource persons moved from door-to-door giving voluntary counselling and testing services to people in the rural areas.
The programme was funded by the Centre for Disease Control based in the US. Dr. Felix Ochom, the health officer of Kumi, said 229,596 people tested for HIV under the programme.
He said 12,313 children below 18 years were also tested. Ochom added that 172 of the children were found to be HIV positive, while 934 couples were found to be discordant in both districts.
The country director of Centre for Disease Control, Kevin McNeill, said they would consider extending the programme because it brought services nearer to families.
