Uganda: Sida Funds Anti-AIDS Campaign

New Vision (Kampala) - December 19, 2007
Joel Ogwang

Kampala - THE Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) has donated sh10.1b to help combat HIV/AIDS among the fishing communities of Lake Victoria basin. The 'fisheries component' will be implemented by the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO).

The group and the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) signed a three-year (2007-2010) pact under the Lake Victoria basin partnership, to implement the scheme.

Fiona Nunan, the LVFO community development specialist, said the programme aims at reducing the risk of catching HIV/AIDS among mobile populations.

"Three groups of people have been identified as priority targets: fishing communities, seasonal workers in agricultural plantations and university students," she said.

Nunan was speaking during a national HIV/AIDS in fishing communities' workshop at Colline Hotel, Mukono, on Monday.

Joyce Ikwaput, a senior fisheries officer, said the AIDS pandemic had taken a toll on the fishing communities of all the three states sharing Lake Victoria waters namely; Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

She said the exchange of sex for fish was common in the fishing communities and blamed the phenomenon on the high mobility of fishermen.

"Most fishermen travel long distances while fishing and spend most of the time away from their wives. They end up engaging in unprotected sex with other women for fish," she said.
