Uganda: Promote Food Security to Fight Aids

New Vision (Kampala) - December 9, 2007
Irene Nabusoba

Kampala - THE World Food Programme (WFP) has urged the Government to enhance food security to fight HIV AIDS.

Addressing participants at a national dissemination workshop on AIDS, Livelihoods and Food Security, Alix Loriston, WFP's deputy country director, said high malnutrition rates affect the level of drug adherence.

"The relationship between food, nutrition and HIV is mostly revealed in the role of food in enhancing effective care and treatment of individuals living with HIV/AIDS. We need a strong policy on food and nutrition access," Loriston said.

Loriston said there has been progress in preventing new infections, but strategies that address the relationship between gender and food security as key prevention pillars of the epidemic, are lacking.

The function, organised by the Regional Network on AIDS, Livelihoods and Food Security, attracted over 100 participants from government departments, Members of Parliament and the civil society.

The one-day event at Grand Imperial Hotel, Kampala was aimed at finding alternatives to ensuring food security to fight the AIDS epidemics.

Participants said food security is not being given the necessary attention in the National Strategic Plan.
