Uganda: Urban Authorities to Fight HIV/Aids

New Vision (Kampala) - December 2, 2007
Elvis Basudde

Kampala - UGANDA has notably reduced the spread of HIV/AIDS over the last two decades, dropping from 18% in 1991 to 6.4% in 2004.

However, HIV/AIDS prevalence remains high in urban areas at 10.1% compared to 5.7% in rural areas, according to National HIV/AIDS Sero-Behavioural Survey 2004/2005.

The study indicates urbanisation is growing fastest in Sub-Saharan Africa. Sixteen percent of Uganda's population lives in urban areas.

There is, therefore, an urgent need to intensify the fight against HIV/AIDS in urban areas. Thus, the Alliance of Mayors and Municipal Leaders on HIV/AIDS In Africa (AMICAALL), Uganda Chapter, was initiated, says the national coordinator, Dr. John Migisa.

Peter Muwanga, chairperson AMICAALL Uganda, says urban leaders have been empowered to do what they can even with the lack of funding from the Government.

"AMICAALL is recognised by Uganda AIDS Commission and other HIV/AIDS partners as a key player in HIV/AIDS response in urban areas," says Dr Migisa.
