New Vision (Kampala) - November 28, 2007
Ronald Kalyango

Kampala - About 500 couples turned up for free counselling and voluntary HIV testing at the AIDS Information Centre headquarters in Mengo-Kisenyi on Monday. The exercise, dubbed 'Couple Week', runs till the end of the month and is targeting over 2,000 couples.

It is part of the activities organised to commemorate the World AIDS Day that falls on December 1. "Much as we have planned for 2,000 couples, we don't mind if 3,000 turn up," said Dr. Raymond Byaruhanga, the executive director. Drake Katongole, the Kampala branch manager, said the exercise had begun in Kampala but would roll out to the upcountry branches in Kabale, Mbrara, Jinja, Soroti, Mbale, Lira and Arua.

He said on other days, clients pay sh8,000 for the exercise, which also includes treatment for tuberculosis, syphilis and family planning services. Venessa Tremamunno, the public relations and advocacy manager, encouraged people to go for testing. "We are concerned by recent HIV/AIDS statistics indicating that the disease is most prevalent among people aged 24 to 49. "These are basically the couples and most of them are in the working class," she noted. Tremamunno dispelled fears that HIV-infected couples could not have babies. "People should know that many babies that have been born by discordant parents," she noted.

The advocay manager added that in the 17 years of existance, the AIDS information centre had counselled and treated about 1.6 million people.
