Queen to Visit Mildmay

Kampala - THE Queen will interact with people living with HIV/AIDS at the Mildmay Centre during her visit to Uganda next week. The centre is located in Lweza on Entebbe Road, 12km south of Kampala.

According to the British press, this will be Queen Elizabeth's first visit to an AIDS clinic. In a recent interview, John Nagenda, the coordinator of the Queen's media coverage, said: "The Queen will visit Mildmay, an institution funded under the 20m Pound sterling grant from the British government.

"However, I cannot give you the date for security reasons," he added. The 81-year-old Queen, who first visited Uganda in 1954, returns on Wednesday for a four-day tour. The royal party will include Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, Charles the Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

The British monarchical head will also preside over the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala on November 23.

She will address the members of parliament and attend several receptions, notably with local cultural leaders.

Nagenda also revealed that Prince Charles will visit Kawempe, a sprawling slum near Kampala.

His father, Prince Philip, is scheduled to visit Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kasese, a sanctuary teeming with different game species.

The royal party is also expected to visit Kitante Primary School in Kampala and tour the source of the Nile in Jinja.

John Hamilton, the second secretary at the British High Commission, told The New Vision that President Yoweri Museveni invited Charles to Uganda as a special guest.

This was in recognition of Prince Charles' support for activities and interest in the Commonwealth.

"His Royal Highness will see the work supported by the British government," added Hamilton.

The UK media last week reported that Charles intends to use the Kampala visit to persuade the 53 member nations to pick him as the Queen's successor in the Commonwealth.

He will attend several meetings with the organisation's foreign ministers in a bid to win their support, the media reported.
