New Vision (Kampala) - November 11, 2007
Elvis Basudde
TASO Jinja, emerged best in the music, dance and drama festival organised by the AIDS Support Organisation (TASO) Uganda, under the theme: Scaling up prevention. Other participants were TASO Mulago, TASO Entebbe, Kagadi Hospital and HOSTA, a community development organisation.
TASO Jinja scooped awards in original composition, folk songs and traditional dance, while TASO Mulago took the award for best in drama. They received plagues and certificates from Joseph Musoke, the LC5 chairman of Mityana district.
Musoke said Mityana has a high HIV prevalence of 14%, compared to the national prevalence of 7%, yet people have not come out to aggressively spread the anti-AIDS messages to the communities of over 300,000 people. He said only 7,000 people have tested for HIV in the whole district.
He said they have a big task of ensuring that more people know their HIV status. The area Member of Parliament, Ssozi Kaddumukasa, castigated pastors who advise people living with HIV/AIDS to stop taking antiretroviral drugs.
He said the pastors can pray for the patients while encouraging them to continue with the treatment.
