Soldier faces Court Martial for killing lover over HIV infection

New Vision (Kampala) - October 24, 2007
Chris Ocowun

A UPDF soldier, who killed his girlfriend for allegedly infecting him with HIV, has appeared before the Court Martial at Parongo displaced persons camp in Amuru district. Activities at the camp came to a standstill as residents turned up to witness the trial.

It is alleged that Pte. Dennis Omona Anywar fired 32 bullets at Beatrice Nancy Akio and fled to Ongako camp, where he reported the murder to the Police.

Silvano Kibwota, a policeman, said upon interrogation, Omona admitted to killing Akio alleging that she had infected him with HIV.

But the accused denied the charges.

Brig. Peter Kerim, the head of the court, warned the residents against mob justice. "We all must follow the law of this country. But that does not mean that we kill those who violate the rights of other people through mob justice."

The legal officer, Lt. Tumuhire Ruhanga, said the aim of the trial was to show that even soldiers are held accountable for their actions.

The other members of the court include, Maj. Francis Byaruhanga, Maj. Christopher Bazyaki, Lt. Y.K Mugarura, Christine Nekesa and Lt. Samuel Lagara.
