The basic care package was mainly for persons living with HIV/AIDS and their families. It is designed to deliver information and health products aimed at preventing infections among the families.
The kit, that was launched at the Crested Crane Hotel in Jinja, also seeks to reduce HIV transmission to unborn children and sexual partners.
The kit contains two insecticide-treated nets, a 20-litre jerrycan, a filter cloth, and a sodium hypochlorite solution for water treatment, condoms for the males and information on cotrimoxazole prophylaxis, an antibiotic which is supposed to be taken by children exposed to or infected with HIV.
The Jinja district health officer, Dr. David Kitimbo, urged the Government to equip health centres and train more doctors and nursing assistants from sub-districts.
The kits are distributed freely to HIV patients through organisations caring for and supporting the patients.
