"We have 10,000 people here and they can make a lot of polythene bags, so they have started learning," says Prof. Keith McAdam, the IDI Director. "All those papers that are thrown away could be made into bags."
They started with old newspapers as the raw material but later included other types of paper.
After learning the skills at IDI they go home to produce paper bags in their backyards.
Barbara Mirembe, a peer leader, says friends have been coached on how to sell their paper bags through neighbourhood shops. "We don't have an organised market yet," she says.
As pointed out by Mirembe, every challenge presents a new opportunity.
