U.S. Gives Sh485b for HIV Programmes

New Vision (Kampala) - September 30, 2007
Dismus Buregyeya

THE U.S. government has increased funding for HIV/Aids programmes to $280m (about sh485b).

This is an increase by $30b from last year.

The revelation was made by the U.S. ambassador, Steven Browning, at the opening of Ten Tables Restaurant in Masaka recently.

"Uganda is among the highest beneficiaries from the HIV/Aids programme and we shall continue to increase its funding annually."

He said the U.S. government was eagerly waiting for action by the Government on people implicated in the misuse of the Global Fund.

On the disastrous floods in the north-eastern region, Browning said the U.S. government had contributed $500,000 (about sh865m) for relief supplies to the affected people.

He added that they were waiting for a report on the situation for more support.

According to Theophane Nikyema, the UN humanitarian coordinator, a sh75b appeal for relief aid was recently launched to assist about 300,000 people affected by the floods.

On the issue of the Juba peace talks between the Government and the LRA rebels, Browning said his government was monitoring the progress of the talks.

"Although the U.S. government is not a signatory to the International Criminal Court, we do not under-estimate their principles. They want accountability for the atrocities committed during the war," he affirmed.

The ambassador noted that the ongoing consultations are crucial for the peace process.

He added that he will visit development projects, especially those funded by the U.S. government and individuals, in November.

In attendance was the Masaka LC5 chairperson, Vincent Ssempijja and the Masaka Municipality MP, JB Kawanga.
