Emmanuel Katongole, the managing director of Quality Chemicals, said the plant, which is the first in the region, will manufacture ARVs, anti-malarial tablets among other drugs. He said the drugs, which will be manufactured in collaboration with Cipla's products, are essential drugs such as ARVs, anti-asthmatics and anti-cancer drugs which are sold in America, Europe, Middle East and Africa.
When complete, the factory will employ about 500 workers.
It has been approved by Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation.
Katongole revealed that scientists and medical practitioners will be trained at the plant.
He explained that the plant will reduce the cost of drugs in the country.
"The cost of drugs had gone up and yet malaria and HIV are on the increase."
Uganda has been importing most of its drugs from India and China.
