HIV/Aids Patients Appeal for More Drugs

New Vision (Kampala) - September 17, 2007
Esther Mukyala

Kampala - PEOPLE living with HIV/Aids have appealed to the Government to increase the accessibility of Antiretroviral (ARV) drugs in order to live more positive, productive and prolonged lives.

In a report read out at the 11th annual general meeting of The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO) Jinja on Saturday, the clients thanked the Government for the support it was rendering the organisation. The day's theme was scaling up the HIV/Aids prevention.

"Clients are being treated with ARVs, Septrine prophylaxis and there is improvement in their health. But we appeal for more of those drugs because there are many people living with HIV/Aids," Sarah Kyesimira, a clients' representative said.

TASO Jinja Centre serves 6,825 clients with at least 1,820 of them on ARVs. A total of 92 are children.

"Under the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), we have a total of 1,820 clients. 72.7% are female and 27.3% are male. We hope that 2,250 clients will be able to access ARTs by March 2008," the centre manager, Cissy Musumba, said in her report.

She observed that the disparity in the figures of people seeking TASO services was as a result of a higher health-seeking behaviour among the women. She appealed to the men to open up and go for the services.

The Kaliro district chairperson, Elijah Kagoda, expressed concern over the increasing number of deaths of people living with HIV yet Government's funding was insufficient.

He added that this was due to the increased population growth rate, progressive HIV prevalence which drains the limited available resources.
