NGO Wants Health Providers Probed

New Vision (Kampala) - September 13, 2007
Hillary Nsambu

THE National Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda (NACWOLA) has urged the Government to investigate health service providers who stigmatise HIV-positive women in internally displaced persons camps.

"We call upon the Government to investigate health providers who are stressing people living with HIV/AIDS in camps by denying them ARVs, claiming that they do not settle in one place," said Annet Biryetega, the national coordinator.

Addressing members at Green Valley Hotel in Kampala on Saturday, Biryetega said the uncoordinated movement of displaced persons was not their fault.

"There are cases in Masindi district and Kiryandongo Hospital where HIV-positive women have been discontinued from anti-retroviral treatment on the flimsy excuse that they do not settle in one place."

She said people living in camps should not be denied their rights to health.

Biryetega explained that there have been cases of irregular supply of ARV drugs in Katakwi, Soroti, Pallisa, Luweero and Hoima districts.

She was concerned that HIV-positive people were still discriminated against and tortured.

She cited a NACWOLA member, who she said was beaten up in Iganga district, for fetching water from a community borehole.

Biryetega said much as the membership of the group had grown, they still relied on donor funds.
