Nabagereka Nagginda Visits HIV Mothers

New Vision (Kampala) - August 30, 2007

"I AM 19 years and was born HIV-positive. I became pregnant and my boyfriend abandoned me after learning that I had Aids," said Annette Kyosiimire, an HIV-positive mother.

"My mother died of Aids when I was still a child. I never stayed with my father. I'm currently staying with my step-father, who is also HIV-positive."

Kyosiimire is one of the 50 HIV-positive mothers under the care of Mama's Club. It is a psychological support group for HIV-positive mothers based in Kamwokya. She gave her testimony, during a visit by the Nabagereka, Sylvia Nagginda, to the home on Thursday.

Nagginda lauded the club's patron, Prof. Florence Mirembe, and the founder, Dr. Lydia Mungherera, for their commitment to uplifting HIV-positive women.

"I have not come to console you (HIV-positive mothers), but to encourage you. Every person has problems. However, what is important is how you overcome them," Nagginda said.

"At such a time when you are HIV-positive, you are abandoned and neglected. But you are supposed to learn how to live a new kind of life," she added.

The Nabagereka said she would seek scholarships for HIV-positive mothers.

"There is also need for a child-care centre for nurturing the children, while their mothers are at school."

Mungherera was glad to note that many members were now living happily.

She said the mothers were being taught how to earn a living and reach out to other infected women.

"We also need to take back these mothers to school, so that they can earn a living."

Mirembe was concerned that there were many HIV-positive mothers who need special attention.

She called upon well-wishers to financially support them.
