Utl Reaches Out to Children Living With HIV/Aids

New Vision (Kampala) - August 29, 2007
Nigel Nassar

Uganda telecom (utl) recently embarked on a mission to help children in northern Uganda who are living with HIV/Aids. Over 150,000 children are living with HIV/Aids, about 20,000 of whom were infected through mother-to-child transmission,

As part of its corporate social responsibility, utl's Annual Leadership Series took a charity stance.

The company recently collected sh7m from a motivational speaking charity dinner, in which renowned author Rob Parsons was the guest speaker.

Last week, utl invested sh14m in necessities, which it ferried to Gulu. The items were donated to HIV-positive children registered with Health Alert, Uganda, an NGO.

Health Alert Uganda works in collaboration with health units to help children living with HIV/Aids.

They provide about 1,200 HIV-positive children with medical care and food supplies to ensure that their lives are prolonged.

The organisation's programme coordinator, Michael Ochora, together with the disadvantaged children and their parents, recently received an assortment of goods from utl officials and the three Miss Uganda winners, whose involvement was to show support to the children.

The goods included blankets, soap, sugar, powdered milk, sanitary towels, beans, maize flour and pens. Ochora said Health Alert Uganda establishes contact with main referral hospitals and health centres to refer HIV-positive children to them for recruitment.

The organisation, which also operates in Amuria district, hopes to expand to other places to make sure HIV-positive children are not isolated.

utl marketing and communications officer, Mark Kaheru, said the donation was a sign of the company's desire to give back to the people.

He promised that the company would continue supporting Health Alert.

This is the second time utl has extended a helping hand to Health Alert, after it built a dormitory for Sunrise Home in Fort Portal.
