132,000 new HIV infections registered

New Vision (Kampala) - December 13, 2006
Carol Natukunda

Statistics released yesterday show that the number of HIV

infections is projected to increase from 1.1 million to 1.8 million in 2012, if the rate of infection remains constant.

"HIV prevalence has remained stable between 6% and 7%. But about 132,000 new infections have been recorded from 2005 alone; including 27,000 children," consultant Dr. Wilford Kirungi said. He was presenting an assessment of HIV prevention under the 2000/01 -2005/06 National HIV/AIDS Strategic Framework.

This was during the joint annual review by the Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC) secretariat at Kabira Country Club in Kampala.

Kirungi said 60% of the new infections were among married women aged 30-34 years and married men aged 40-44 years, a shift of 5-10 years from the early 1990s.

"It's driven by mainly men engaging in extra marital sex without using condoms. There is a decreasing condom use during high risk sex from 62% in 2000 to 58% in 2005. About 77% of the HIV infected are sexually active, yet only 29% use condoms consistently," Kirungi added.

The main sources of new infections were marital sex (42%), commercial sex (21%), casual sex (14%), mother-to-child transmission (22%) and medical injections at 1%.

Rhoda Wanyeze, a thematic consultant on HIV care and treatment, warned that although antiretroviral therapy had increased and delivery of services improved, the burden would still be enormous.

UAC director general Dr. Kihumuro Apuuli said there was need to pay attention to the changing trends.
