The disease is commonest among fishmongers, who accounted for 25% of the infected people so far tested.
This was revealed in a survey done in January 2005 by the Integrated Community Based Initiative (ICOBI) which tested 800,000 people in the district.
Sheema North MP Elioda Tumwesigye, who chairs the parliamentary standing committee on HIV/AIDS, said ICOBIÆs findings showed that 85% of the HIV-positive people did not know that they were infected.
He said half of the districtÆs population stood the risk of infection. He encouraged people to go for voluntary HIV/AIDS testing.
He said, as leaders, they were exploring areas of research with universities to reduce the HIV/AIDS transmission.
Elioda, who was speaking at a public dialogue, advised people to use condoms, treat genital herpes and use ARVs to lengthen the life of patients.
