Children want expiring ARVs

New Vision (Kampala) - December 5, 2006

CHILDREN living with HIV/AIDS in Gulu district have demanded to be given the ARV drugs which are about to expire at the National Medical Stores.

"Children should be protected against HIV/AIDS. HIV-positive children need treatment. Our politicians and district leaders should ensure that hospitals have ARV drugs that children living with HIV/AIDS must access.

"ARV drugs are expiring yet there are children and adults who need them," the children's representative, Pheona Arach, said during the World AIDS Day celebrations at Kaunda grounds on Friday.

The media recently reported that some ARV drugs were expiring in the national Medical Stores.

Another child living with the virus, Gloria Ajok, advised her colleagues on Thursday not to abandon studies for fear that they would die soon.

Children and officials of NGOs marched from the resident district commissioner's (RDC's) office up to Kaunda grounds. They were flagged off by RDC Col. Walter Ochora.

Gulu LC5 vice-chairman Makmot Kitara warned teachers against defilement.

"There have been cases of teachers defiling, raping and even sometimes disappearing with children. We as teachers should show the public that we are the light. It's embarrassing to defile school children," he said.

Arach advised parents to "be faithful in their marriages. Before you marry, go and test your blood and use condoms," she said.
