Uganda: Abstinence Will Protect Youth - Janet

New Vision (Kampala) - December 2, 2006
Anne Mugisa

THE First Lady, Janet Museveni has insisted that despite many voices attacking it, sexual abstinence is the only sure way of avoiding contracting HIV.

Mrs. Museveni, who marked the World AIDS Day at the Uganda Christian University, Mukono on Friday said she would not be caught advising youth otherwise.

"I would not be caught advising you to take any shortcuts or compromise your lives by using any device invented by man, such as condoms, in order to facilitate any desire to go against God's clear plan for your life. God's plan for your life is that you should honour your body because it is His temple," Mrs. Museveni said.

She asked the youth at the university to sensitise and guide other youth to abstain from premarital sex.

Quoting the Bible, she cautioned the students to live exemplary lives of love, faith and purity.

She warned that the youth should not be complacent in the face of rising HIV infection rates.
