New Vision (Kampala) - December 1, 2006
Patrick Jaramogi
state minister for health in charge of general duties Dr. Richard Nduhura said this last week after opening a sh230m Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) HIV/AIDS clinic at Mpigi health centre.
"Currently, the people on ARTs are about 80,000 but by the end of next year, we shall be providing ARVs to at least 120,000 people, of which 15% will be children aged under 15 years," he said.
Nduhura said the government plans to equip the country's entire 214 health centre IVs with HIV testing laboratories and kits.
"These will be done in four phases. I am happy that you partnered with your Ireland friends of Realta to fund the construction of this clinic. This clinic will not only benefit the people of Mpigi but the entire nation," he said.
JCRC director Prof. Peter Mugyenyi said the Mpigi centre brought the number of JCRC HIV centres to 42.
"We shall continue working with Mildmay centre to ensure that this centre provides first class services to the people of Mpigi," he said.
JCRC board chairman Prof Opio Epelu urged residents to utilise the clinic.
He, however, reminded the people that ARVs do not cure
AIDS. "Those who are sick, come for drugs and those who are safe, remain safe, especially the youth," Epelu said.
The area Member of Parliament, Peter Claver Mutuluza, thanked the Irish government for the support.
