New Vision (Kampala) - November 21, 2006
Arthur Okot
Each counsellor was given a new bicycle to facilitate their movement.
The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO) centre manager, Kimera Mutebi, said the counsellors were trained with funds from Unicef to help in mobilisating and educating the community against AIDS.
Mutebi said a similar number of people were trained in Kitgum and Lira districts, adding that more would be trained next year after more people leave the camps.
Mutebi said though the HIV/AIDs prevalence was just 11% in Gulu and Amuru districts, people were aware of its dangers and had started taking preventive measures and those living with it were coming out to seek treatment.
Currently, TASO is serving over 6,000 clients. Everyday, between 30-50 people visit the TASO centre. To ease congestion and save patients from long distances, outreach centres have been opened in Bobi, Awach and Pabbo internally displaced people's camps.
