NGO uses pupils in anti-AIDS war

New Vision (Kampala) - November 14, 2006
Halima Shaban

A new initiative to eradicate HIV/AIDS in primary school children was launched at Naguru Infant Primary School last week.

The initiative, the winners society, under Savannah Sunrise Foundation, Uganda (SAS), will help primary school children get knowledge on HIV/AIDS and mentor children.

"We must focus on the children if we are to save a generation. We will go to kindergartens, primary schools and churches to reach them.

We want to increase their understanding of the disease and how it's transmitted," said Obed Rubaiza, head of mentorship programme.

Rubaiza said SAS's mission was to decrease HIV prevalence from 6% to about 1% in the next 10 years.

"Uganda has a record to show that this is an achievable venture," he said.

Rubaiza said SAS hoped to achieve this through education.

"Education is our only vaccination available against HIV. Our approach therefore is Immunisation By Education Strategy (IBES)," he said.

He said information given to the child must be proportionate to his age, ability to absorb, understand and interpret.
