Vendors register for ARV drugs

New Vision (Kampala) - November 6, 2006
Harriette Onyalla

ABOUT 1,740 patients have registered for anti-retroviral treatment at the Uganda Cares clinic in St. Balikuddembe market in Kampala.

This follows increased sensitisation by the Market Vendors AIDS Project (MAVAP) peer educators, Gloria Kalule, a Uganda Cares clinician has said.

"About 94% of the patients come from Marie Stopes through the peer educators. A total of 600 are receiving treatment. We have 30 children receiving ART.

"We have to liaise with peer educators to ensure that they encourage parents to bring in more children. We suspect the number of children whose parents are vendors in this market is bigger but they are being neglected or they have died," she said.

Kalule was addressing visitors to the market who included the Norwegian Secretary for International development in the foreign affairs ministry, Margareth Stenhammer and secretary of State for Children and Equality in the Ministry of children and Eqality, Kjell Erik Oie.

The guests, in company of social development minister Syda Bbumba, on Wednesday inspected the projects of MAVAP in St. Balikuddembe market.

MAVAP is an initiative to bring HIV/AIDS services closer to market vendors
