'Abstinence a badge of pride'

New Vision (Kampala) - October 30, 2006
Carol Natukunda

FIRST Lady Janet Museveni has urged the youth to consider abstinence as a badge of pride.

"You need to shun misguided people who say that if young people abstain from sex, it means they are backward, local or foolish, or that if you don't have sex before marriage, you will get complications in future. The youth should wear abstinence as a badge of pride not shame," she said on Saturday.

This was in a speech read for her by Bushenyi Woman MP Mary Karooro at the launch of a seven-year global campaign against HIV/AIDS in Kampala.

The event, whose theme was "Stop AIDS, fight abstinence stigma,' also featured the raising of symbolic flags - one for abstinence and another for fidelity in marriage as keys to fighting HIV/AIDS.

Hundreds of university and secondary school students and parents participated in an 'abstinence pride march,' from the Constitutional Square to Kololo in Kampala.
