New Vision (Kampala) - December 28, 2005
Chris Kiwawulo
He said the number of children on ARV and non-ARV treatment was growing at more than 50% per year. The centre looks after 2,900 children.
Luyirika said the centre was the leading specialist out-patient facility for children with HIV/AIDS in the country.
"Of Mildmay's 5,700 regular clients, around 1,350 adults and 650 children were receiving ARV treatment.
"Of the 2,000, some 700 have their costs borne by the patient, their family, friends or a sponsor, another 1,150 have benefited since March 2004 from US president George Bush's PEPFAR scheme," the report said.
Luyirika said since February 2005, 150 other patients had benefited from the scale-up of ARVs supplied by the Ministry of Health.
He commended the US centre for disease control and prevention for funding 81% of the centre's running costs. He said the 19% comes from various sources, including patient charges, charges on courses offered at the centre and other donations.
