HIV linked to urinary tract infections

New Vision (Kampala) December 7, 2005
Timothy Makokha

A graduate from Mbarara University of Science and Technology recently scooped a science award during the scientific conference at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Emmanuel Azore, a graduate of medical laboratory sciences, beat 28 entrants to win the 23rd Scientific Kerchan Award, an annual scientific award. The founder of the award, LLO Kerchan, is one of the commissioners in the Health Service Commission.

Azore presented a paper titled 'Causative bacterial microorganisms of urinary tract infections (UTI) and their antibiogram in HIV/AIDS patients in Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital'.

Azore established that most people living with HIV/AIDS in Mbarara Hospital, who reported bacterial infections in the urinary tract, failed to respond to commonly used antibiotics for treatment and management of UTI. He put the percentage at 60.

The study is the first of its kind in the region. A similar study carried in the US in 2002 recorded 17% of patients living with HIV/AIDS as having UTI. About 40% of these patients developed resistance to antibiotics used in treating UTI.

Azore recommended that a survey be carried out among HIV/AIDS patients. "This will allow the Government to institute preventive measures, encourage accurate diagnosis for appropriate treatment and management of this infection among people living with HIV/AIDS," he says.
