New Vision (Kampala) - December 5, 2005
Florence Nakaayi
AMICAALL co-ordinator Dr. John Mugisa said the fund would be shared among four of the implementing centres in Kampala, Busia, Hoima and Bombo.
Mugisa said they were to construct a social support centre in Kampala Central Division to offer training to the increasing number of needy children.
"After training, we provide our students with equipment in their fields of work to enable them lead a sustainable life," he said. AMICAALL was formed in 1998, following higher prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the urban areas, which in the long run affected urban development plans.
The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in urban areas is at 10.9% compared to 6.4% in rural areas.
In Uganda, AMICAALL, is chaired by Kampala mayor Ssebaana Kizito.
Mugisa said so far the Alliance had engaged 400 orphans in income-generating activities and trained 200 in vocational skills.
The alliance is also supported by the World Health Organisation, the Global fund, UNAIDS and UNDP.
Other urban authorities under the alliance are Gulu, Kitgum, Kamuli, Jinja, Soroti, Iganga, Fortportal, Lira and Kisoro districts.
