"We should stop bickering and sensitise the masses on how to fight HIV/AIDS and to live positive with the disease. The president of Uganda has championed the fight against HIV/AIDS and as a result, the prevalence reduced to 7% nationally although it is still high in northern Uganda," Oryem, who represented President Yoweri Museveni, said at the World AIDS Day at Boma grounds in Kitgum on Thursday.
He said UN agencies should be near the war-affected people in the north who are in need of humanitarian assistance.
"These recent attacks on civilians in the north are opportunistic beca-use the rebels are no longer strong. They have been weakened and the number of road ambushes has reduced," Oryem said.
The event was organized by the Alliance of mayors and municipal leaders on HIV/AIDS in Africa (amicall), the National Forum of Persons Living with HIV/AIDS Networks in Uganda and Uganda AIDS Commission.
The day under the theme "Stop AIDS; Keep the promise", was organised with funds from UNDP and other UN agencies.
