AIDS day activities irk RDC

New Vision (Kampala) - December 3, 2005
Ali Mambule

RAKAI acting Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Lt. Kagulire has asked district leaders to stop inviting drama groups to the Aids day celebrations.

Kagulire said he was irked by the dancing and singing done on the day while people remembered relatives who died at the hands of the disease.

Speaking at the Aids day celebrations at Nsumba Primary School in Kalisizo on Thursday, Kagulire said, "I shall not accept this next time if I remain Rakai RDC." He added that the more people danced for Aids, the more it would stay.

Kagulire said it would be proper if religious leaders were invited and spent the day praying for those who died of the Aids epidemic. Kooki MP Capt. David Matovu said the Government was preparing a law that would force people to be more hygienic.

"You have always disturbed the doctors by crying of diarrhoea and other related diseases when actually you do not have latrines at home. A law is now coming which will force you have the latrines," he said.

Matovu said politicians always shied away from asking people to build latrines in their homes because they threatened to deny them votes.

Martin Iga, the chief administrative officer in charge of Kabula county, asked all the groups that received the Community HIV/Aids Initiative (CHAI) funds to account for them before middle of the month or else they would not get more.
