Ssebaana says leaders copied Museveni zeal in fighting AIDS

New Vision (Kampala) - December 3, 2005

Several local leaders have adopted President Yoweri Museveni's zeal in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Uganda, Kampala mayor John Ssebaana Kizito has said.

"We took it upon ourselves to follow in the footsteps of the President to do something to assist in the fight against HIV/AIDS by mobilising and sensitising the community about the drugs of HIV/AIDS and supporting drama groups that preach the gospel of AIDS," Ssebaana said.

He was speaking at the World AIDS day celebrations in Kitgum on Thursday, in his capacity as chairman of the Alliance of Mayors and Municipal Leaders on HIV/AIDS in Africa (AMICALL), Uganda chapter.

He said AMICALL had distributed radio sets to the community because some HIV/AIDS information was provided through radios.

"We have also trained volunteers who have become HIV/AIDS councillors in the IDP camps, municipalities and towns.

We have also provided some material and food rations to supplement those given by World Food Programme to the People Living With HIV/AIDS," he added.
