TASO chief urges schools on AIDS

New Vision (Kampala) - December 1, 2005
Charles Kakamwa

SCHOOL administrators should intensify music and drama activities to convey messages about HIV/AIDS, the executive director of The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO) has said.

Dr. Alex Coutinho said, "If the pupils are given such important messages on diseases like HIV/AIDS, they will pass them on to the parents and other community members and create an impact," he said.

Coutinho was on Monday speaking at Victoria Nile primary school in Jinja during a tour of schools, AIDS service organisations and clients by a delegation from Botswana.

The 17-member group, led by Tsetsele Fantan, is in the country to assess the impact of the disease on the communities and how the government managed to influence the reduction of the infection level.

Jinja mayor David Wakudumira said the fight against HIV/AIDS needed concerted effort.

"That is why we formed an alliance of mayors and municipal leaders to fight its social impact," he said.
