Speaking on Monday at the awarding ceremony at Nommo Gallery in Nakesero, club chairman Herbert muhumuza said the two served mankind beyond the call of their duties. "Rotary is not for the rich but those rich at heart to serve the society beyond themselves. Mwebaze has assisted over 30,000 mothers to deliver, while nyamayarwo has gone beyond herself to empower those infected and affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic," he said.
Nyamayarwo is a widow whose husband succumbed to AIDS in 1992, leaving her with 10 children. Later, her son aged five died of AIDS, while a 17-year-old son, stigmatised by schoolmates over the loss of his father, disappeared.
Diagnosed with HIV, Nyamayarwo left her job to look after her children and empower those infected and affected by the disease. Nyamayarwo has helped establish several organisations for people living with HIV. Mwebaze trained as a nurse at Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery in 1977 before graduating with BSc Nursing at Aga Khan University. She is the manager of Ward 6D/E in Mulago Hospital.
