Unicef country representative Martin mogwanja said about 40 children acquire the virus daily with one child dying every hour.
He said mother-to-child transmission was responsible for 25,000 HIV- positive newborns each year.
Mogwanja said this at the launch of the global children and AIDS campaign, under the theme "Unite for children, Unite against AIDS" at Grand Imperial Hotel, Kampala on Friday.
The campaign aims at strengthening the response of global policy makers, national governments, pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions and public groups towards HIV/AIDS and children.
Mogwanja said although 25% of pregnant women receive services to prevent transmission to infants, the intervention to care for and treat HIV-position children is lagging behind, with 10% children accessing Anti-retroviral treatment.
