IDP camps increase HIV/AIDS prevalence in Katakwi

New Vision (Kampala) - November 11, 2005

THE prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Katakwi district has increased from nine to 21% since IDP camps were established last year, the state minister for northern Uganda rehabilitation has said.

Dan nSalasatta reports that Grace Akello said the increase was caused by the lifestyle in the internally displaced people's (IDPs) camps established as a result of the Lord's Resistance Army rebel and Karimojong cattle raiders' incursions into the area. She was opening the 34th Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) clinic in Katakwi recently.

"It is most unfortunate that when people begun living in the IDP camps, they became hopeless because they do not engage in any activity other than resorting to alcohol and promiscuity, resulting into HIV spread," Akello said.
