First Lady appeals on abstinence

The New Vision - October 22, 2005

FIRST Lady Janet Museveni has appealed to the youth to abstain from pre-marital sex, writes Vision Reporter.

Mrs Museveni also said it was incorrect for those opposed to the promotion of abstinence to regard it as impractical and a danger to the youth.

She was on Wednesday addressing hundreds of students of St. Lawrence Group of Schools at an AIDS awareness seminar. The seminar, under the theme æIt takes God to protect our village,' was held at the London College Campus in Wakiso district.

It also aimed at giving an opportunity to the visiting Trinity Broadcasting network (TBN) filming crew to familiarise themselves with Uganda's approach to the fight against AIDS and the education system in the country.

Mrs Museveni said abstinence from pre-marital sex was normal, attainable and the best way to combat HIV/AIDS-related infections.

She said although the HIV/AIDS scourge has no known science-based cure yet, Uganda managed to reduce its infections from 30% in 1987 to 6% now.

Mrs Museveni attributed this success to the promotion of abstinence. She said the reduced infection reported among the youth was enough justification that abstinence played a major role in the reduction of infections.

The principal of the St. Lawrence schools, law-rence Mukiibi, hailed President Museveni and his wife for spearheading the fight against AIDS.
