Uganda remembers Philly Lutaaya

New Vision (Kampala) - October 18, 2005
Patrick Jaramogi

AS Ugandans commemorated the late Philly Bongoley Lutaaya Day yesterday, smiles and relief filled the faces of patients admitted at St. Gonzaga ward in nsambya Hospital and others at Buyinja zone in Kabalagala in Kampala.

To the many who are bed-ridden with HIV/AIDS, a tray of eggs, a roll of toilet tissue, a bar of soap, sugar, blue band and a mosquito net were enough to put a wide smile on their faces.

Uganda Aids commission chief retired Bishop Barnabas Halem'Imana led the team that visited nsambya hospital's Home Care department, the wards and other people living with HIV/AIDS at their homes.

Praying for the sick after handing over the gifts, he said, "Be strong and have faith. Sooner than later you will be out of this place and better."

Lawrence Ssekimpi, the Home Care's assistant coordinator, said they cater for 8,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, 1,000 of whom are children. He said 1,036 were receiving free AIDS drugs.

At the constitutional Square where the main celebrations were held to mark 16 years since Lutaaya died, poems, songs and drama about the scourge were presented by groups from Mpigi, Rakai, Kampala and Gulu districts.

Musician Lutaaya was the first public figure in Uganda to publicly declare his sero status.
