The Pfizer-funded IDI, which belongs to Makerere University Medical School, handles mostly HIV/AIDS and other related infectious diseases.
Construction of the three storey complex is to start next year. A team from the Pfizer Inc. led by the chairman and chief executive officer, Dr. Hank McKinnell is visiting the institute, built with funding from their corporation, at US$14m.
The IDI, which opened in 2003 and was handling 30 patients three days a week, now handles 300 everyday, the IDI director, Prof. Keith McAdam, said.
The institute, the only one in Africa, combines training of personnel and handles HIV/AIDS patients, research and patient care as complementary activities.
McKinnell said the few other institutes in other countries which handle HIV/AIDS issues only deal with one component.
The institute trains doctors and other health workers from Africa. It also allows researchers from all over the world to conduct research on HIV/AIDS and related diseases.
So far, 531 personnel have been trained from 21 Africa countries, 334 of them medical doctors.
