New Vision (Kampala) - July 6, 2005
Anouk Batard and Fred Ouma
The survey conducted in the seven 'high-risk' districts of Sembabule, Mpigi, Kiboga, Kayunga, Nakasongola, Kalangala and Kampala shows that 82% respondents, mostly men, have knowledge of HIV/AIDS.
However, 26% of them use condoms and only 17% use them correctly.
This means 65% of the people who know how to protect themselves remain at risk of getting infected.
Besides, only 18% of men seek VCT services.
Terp Group is a local communication group that conducted the study entitled "Where are the responsible men nowadays?" Presenting the findings at Hotel Equatoria in Kampala on Monday, Brain Rwehabura attributed increased irresponsibility to complacency, alcohol abuse, vengeance and cultural practices like inheritance of widows.
Rubamira ruraranga, a self-confessed HIV activist, said the main problem was conflicting messages about prevention.
