Govt failed peace talks, says FDC

THE Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has blamed the collapse of the face-to-face peace talks between the Government and the LRA rebels on arrogance and unrealistic demands from the Government.

FDC described as impossible President Yoweri Museveni's demand that all rebels assemble in one place before the talks.

FDC working committee member Jack Sabiti told the party's weekly press briefing that the Government should soften its stand.

Sabiti, who is also Rukiga County MP, said the people in the north condemned to IDP camps, were living in horrifying conditions with HIV/AIDS devouring them.

"If you cannot provide security for people, why don't you give up?" he asked.

He said FDC recognises the achievements of past governments and while it shares in on gains made under the Movement, it takes responsibility of the omissions.

Sabiti slammed the National Resistance Movement-Organisation (NRM-O) for what he described as "political fraud" to exclusively claim the achievements of the Movement system as a spring-board to perpetuate themselves in power.

"While we in FDC are not shy in taking political responsibility for the wrongs committed by the movement, the NRM-O members are only ardent on appropriating the gains of the Movement," he said.

Sabiti said because of the desertions and increasing dissent, NRM-O promoters were confused and incapable of differentiating the ruling Movement system from NRM-O.

He said the Movement must brace for stiff competition in the run to the 2006 presidential elections. Sabiti boosted that FDC would lead the nation to peace and prosperity.
